Deerfield (Plano)

I've already made a mini trip through one of my favorite areas to view holiday lights and it doesn't disappoint. Grab a cup of hot cocoa or a gingerbread latte and take a drive through this festively illuminated neighborhood. The HOA suggests that guests do not stop for photos; it gets very crowded on weekend evenings especially.

Where: Deerfield is located in Northwest Plano between Preston Road and Coit Road. Enter from Legacy on Colonnade and Archgate, noting one-way and restricted-turn signs along Old Pond Drive and Hallmark Drive.

Cost: Free. Carriage rides are available from December 1-31, 2011 through Party Animals Carriage Rides at 214-441-9996.

Kessler Park in Dallas

This is a wonderful neighborhood to view holiday lights.

Directions: From downtown Dallas: go West on I-30. Take the Sylvan exit – turn left (south) on Sylvan. Travel about a half a mile on Sylvan to Colorado – go right (west) on Colorado. Travel another half mile on Colorado to the intersection of Colorado and Lausanne. Look for a big traffic triangle at that intersection with five large trees.

Cost: It's a free drive-through display.

Highland Park (Dallas)

What: Highland Park is the premier neighborhood for viewing holiday lights in Dallas.

Where: The best place to enter is at Armstrong Parkway and Preston Road. The homes are beautifully (and professional) dressed for the holidays. The area is bordered by Preston on the east side, Mockingbird to the north, the Dallas North Tollway to the west, and Armstrong Parkway for an entrance. There are a number of carriage services available for viewing the spectacular lights.

Cost: Free to drive through. Carriage rides are available for a fee.

Prairie Lights

What: Prarie Lights is a two mile stretch of decorations and festive fun featuring over 4 million lights, hundreds of new displays, an all-new Holiday Magic light show, new walk-through lighted displays, pictures with Santa, seasonal food and family fun. About halfway through the drive, Holiday Village has Santa, carnival rides (rides are included with the cost of admission), snacks, and souvenirs. Cars with up to eight people in them cost $15 Mon-Thu, $20 Fri-Sun and holidays. Limos and buses cost more.

When: Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve each year

Where: Lynn Creek Park is at 5700 Lake Ridge Parkway in Grand Prairie. Take I-30 or I-20 to 360 and go south. Make a left of Camp Wisdom Road and a right on Lake Ridge Parkway.

Whistle Stop Christmas

What/When/Where: More than 3 million lights sparkle each night at the 12-acre Hulen Park in Cleburne, which is about 50 miles southwest of Dallas. Check out the Nativity scene, a lighted life-size train and much more. Tonight there'll be a lighted Christmas parade followed by a fest featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus, music and craft vendors. The light display runs evenings through Dec. 31 at Hulen Park, 900 Hillsboro St., Cleburne. The lighted Christmas parade starts tonight at 6 followed by activities at the park. 817-645-2455.
